Olin Shipstead, Engr ’21 (MSE), earned his combined bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in 2021. He currently works for REV Renewables, a renewable energy company. REV develops, deploys, and operates utility-scale solar, wind, and battery storage in competitive power markets across the United States. His position is focused on power market fundamentals, economics, and policy.

How did your degree from EHE prepare you for your career path?

The department's MSE program prepared me exceptionally well for a career in power market modeling and system planning. Ben Hobbs and other faculty members taught courses that were directly transferable to entry-level jobs all across the energy field – electric utilities, consulting firms, grid operators, energy research institutions, private energy companies, and more. The BS and MSE coursework, along with the connections you'll make in the program, will put you at an advantage in a field that is sometimes neglected by coursework at other academic institutions.

What was your favorite thing about the program?

The community within the EHE department was a major highlight of my college experience. The EHE professors are kind, approachable, and genuinely want you to succeed. Smaller class sizes and collaborative assignments also mean strong friendships with fellow classmates. Many of mine still exist today!
