Description
Public Health is a discipline that necessarily happens in teams. This course will prepare you to incorporate diverse perspectives into the work you do, appreciate the benefits of doing so, and teach communication strategies and negotiation skills to ensure that you are prepared to navigate conflict that may arise.
Focuses on the critical need for a variety of perspectives and skill sets to develop an effective public health team. Prepares students to use communication strategies and modalities (written, visual, audio) with various actors, including communities, service users, providers, and policymakers. Focuses on tailoring messages for different audiences and content. Equips students with practical skills that will support the uptake of research for advocacy, behavior change, evidence-informed decision-making, and development and implementation of policies and programs in various global health contexts. Covers topics that emphasize skills in the modern workplace including effective teamwork, conflict resolution, negotiating, and dealing with complexity in health systems.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and explain modalities (written, audio, visual) for communicating audience-appropriate public health research message(s) and the pros and cons of each modality.
  2. Develop audience-appropriate public health content and messaging using appropriate modalities (written, audio, visual).
  3. Apply negotiation & mediation skills to address organizational or community challenges.
  4. Integrate perspectives from other sectors and/or professions to promote and advance population health.
