Tuition and Funding

MPH Scholarships

All applicants admitted to the MPH program are automatically considered for scholarship support. Your application for admission also serves as your scholarship application for several awards (detailed below).

Additional funding opportunities are available and require their own applications (details below).

Funding for Online/Part-Time MPH Students

Bloomberg Fellowship

The Bloomberg Fellows Program is designed for individuals who are currently working with U.S. organizations on the front lines of addiction, violence, adolescent health, environmental challenges, and the food system. Fellows must commit to serving at least one year with the collaborating organization after graduation.

Fellowship details:

  • Additional application required: Yes
  • Amount: Full tuition plus a small stipend
  • Deadline: Submit both your Bloomberg Fellows Application and your SOPHAS application by December 1, 2025. *Applications are now closed. Applications for the 2027 Bloomberg American Health Fellowship will open in Fall 2026.

Welch Scholarship

All online/part-time MPH students receive the Welch Scholarship, significantly reducing tuition costs. This scholarship is automatically applied each term according to your credit enrollment.

The Welch Scholarship reduces the cost of up to 80 total credits—up to 12 credits per term—and can be used for online, in-person, or institute courses. If you enroll in more than 12 credits in a term or institute, the scholarship will cover the first 12 credits, with any additional credits billed at the standard per-credit tuition rate.

Scholarship details:

  • Additional application required? No. Funding is applied automatically for all online/part-time students each term.
  • Amount: $318 per credit, up to 80 credits (maximum 12 per term)

Funding for Full-Time MPH Students

The scholarship committee considers all aspects of the application, particularly personal statements, academic records, and recommendation letters. Applicants are encouraged to submit all materials early in the cycle.

Bloomberg Fellowship

Sommer Scholars Program

The Sommer Scholars Program is a prestigious scholarship and leadership program for outstanding students with the potential to be public health heroes.

Scholarship details:

Institutional Scholarships

All applicants to the full-time format of the MPH program are considered for the Wade Hampton Frost Scholarship, Lowell J. Reed Scholarship, and the Dean's Scholarship.

Scholarship details:

  • Additional application required? No. All accepted full-time MPH applicants are automatically considered.
  • Amount: $10,000 to $40,000

Dean’s Fellowship in Public Health Leadership

The Dean’s Fellowship in Public Health Leadership integrates financial support, applied work experience, peer learning, and formal leadership training as a comprehensive experience for students who seek to become leaders in public health. Upon graduation, Dean’s Leadership Fellows are expected to make a significant impact as leaders in the public health workforce. 

Fellowship details: 

  • Additional application required: No. All accepted full-time MPH applicants are automatically considered.
  • Amount: $10,000 scholarship in the first year of the program
  • Additional benefits:
    • A dedicated faculty mentor
    • Guaranteed work experience with their mentor
    • Connection to a cohort of peer leaders from different degree programs
    • Placement in a course on public health leadership taught by Dean Keshia Pollack Porter, PhD ‘06, MPH

Peter Salama MPH Tuition Scholarship for Refugees

In partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health, the MPH program awards one full-tuition scholarship to an individual who has been displaced due to global conflict.

Eligibility for this scholarship is limited to individuals who have been granted refugee status after being displaced from Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burma (Myanmar), Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, or Venezuela, or is a registered Palestinian refugee, and:

(1) who have refugee status and are living in a country other than the applicant's country of origin, OR

(2) who are residing in the United States: (a) under Temporary Protected Status, or (b) as an asylee, or (c) as a pending asylum applicant.

Peace Corps Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program

All Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) are considered for a partial tuition scholarship and get to participate in an enrichment program. Students partner with community-based organizations; complete practicum projects with local organizations and city and state health departments; and lend their talents and energies to community endeavors. RPCVs will also be considered for all institutional merit-based scholarships.

  • Additional application required? No. Just select “Returned Peace Corps Volunteer” on your SOPHAS application.
  • Amount: $20,000+
  • Total awards per year: All RPCVs admitted to the full-time format of the MPH are awarded a scholarship.

Fundação Maria Emília/Maria Emília Foundation

Citizens and residents of Brazil who have been accepted to the 11-month full-time MPH format are eligible for this full-tuition scholarship awarded jointly by Johns Hopkins and the Fundação Maria Emília.

*If you are applying for this scholarship, your full MPH application must also be submitted by November 1.

Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program

The Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program (PCRTP) T32 provides intensive learning experiences that prepare students for clinical research careers in any discipline, specialty, or subspecialty. The program provides partial tuition and stipend support. Only Johns Hopkins medical students are eligible.

The Indigenous Scholars Program

The Center for Indigenous Health provides financial support for students seeking a master’s or doctoral degree and demonstrate dedication to improving the health, well-being, and self-sufficiency of Indigenous peoples. The program to open to all applicants, regardless of their background, identity, or tribal affiliation.

Scholarship support is based on the availability of funding and may include full or partial support for tuition, stipend, books, and tutoring services.

Matching External Awards

If you are admitted to any of our full-time and dual-degree MPH programs, the program will match scholarships from foundations, government entities, and established philanthropic funding sources, so long as program funds are available.

Admitted students seeking such external funding are encouraged to contact Paul Whong to request a customized official letter of support. Please include the following information in your email:

  • Official award notification on letterhead from the funding
  • Name and email address of the funding representative
  • Brief description of the funding entity
  • Link to information about this funding source

Note: personal funding—for example, from friends and family—is not eligible for matching.

The MPH program only awards merit-based scholarships. If you have questions about need-based scholarships, please contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Federal Aid

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program may forgive the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan while working full-time for an eligible government or non-profit organization.

NIH Loan Repayment Programs will repay up to $35,000 in student loans each year for eligible MD, PhD, or post-doctoral students.
