Johns Hopkins-Pulitzer Global Health Reporting Fellowship
The Johns Hopkins-Pulitzer Global Health Reporting Fellowship is a unique opportunity for Bloomberg School students to do in-depth reporting on a global health issue of their choice and gain a clearer understanding of the media’s role in shaping the global health conversation.
The $5,000 fellowship supports training with journalists from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in Washington, D.C., and covers the cost of in-country reporting, travel, and living expenses. The Center provides technical and editorial support through the planning, reporting and writing/production phases of the fellowship.
The Global Health Reporting Fellowship supports projects that focus on public health issues of global importance that have been underreported or neglected by mainstream media in the U.S.
Any Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health degree student is eligible to apply (including May 2026 graduates). The application deadline is Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
Working with the Pulitzer Center, the selected fellows will produce print and online stories, videos, photojournalism, or work for other media platforms, depending on the project. The Pulitzer Center and the Bloomberg School work with the fellow(s) to place their work in media outlets.

Hopkins-Pulitzer Global Health Reporting Fellowship FAQ
I don’t have any journalism experience. Can I still apply?
Yes! Journalism experience and/or experience writing for a non-academic audience could be helpful if you are selected, but it is not required. Many people without journalism experience have been chosen for this opportunity, and the person who is chosen will participate in training sessions organized by the Pulitzer Center ahead of their travel and there will also be opportunities to work with journalism mentors and editors throughout the process.
I applied last year and I was not selected. May I apply again?
Yes, as long as you are still enrolled as a student, you are welcome to apply again.
I graduated in December 2025; am I still eligible?
Unfortunately, no; you must be currently enrolled as a student at the time the applications are due (but it is okay, for example, to apply if you are expected to graduate in May 2026).
I graduated last May (2025); am I still eligible?
Unfortunately, no; you must be currently enrolled as a student at the time the applications are due (but it is okay, for example, to apply if you are expected to graduate in May 2026).
I’m currently enrolled as a doctoral student in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; am I eligible?
Yes, as long as you are a current student in a program under the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
How many fellows are selected each year?
Only one fellow is chosen per year.
Is it okay to submit a story idea that is based in the U.S.?
Yes, that is fine; however, please be advised that in the past, only projects from other countries have been chosen.
Is it okay to submit a story idea that is on the same topic as one of the other recent winners?
Yes, you may; however, please note that you might have a better chance of being selected if you pick a different topic and/or reporting location than the last several years, because the program likes to reflect geographic and topical depth over time.
Where can I find the articles published by past BSPH winners?
You can read the articles published by past fellows from our school, listed by year, from 2013-2024.
Where can I find the articles published by past fellowship winners from all schools participating in the Pulitzer Center’s Campus Consortium program?
You can read more about the Pulitzer Center’s Campus Consortium reporting fellowships, read about past fellows and find their articles.
Is it okay to submit a story that is in an active conflict zone?
No, this is not allowed under the Pulitzer Center’s rules, because your safety is a primary concern and you would not be able to conduct reporting without significant protection and support in an unstable area.
I’d rather do a video than a written piece; is that okay?
You are welcome to submit a video piece instead of a written piece, however, the BSPH editors in that case would likely want to have a written companion piece published in one of the School’s print or online channels as well.
Do my references need to be professors at BSPH? Do they need to provide a written letter at the time of application?
Beginning this year, we are asking for at least one of your three references to be a BSPH faculty member who might have a direct interest or serve as project mentor; the others can be academic or professional. The contact information for the references should be listed on the application, but they do not need to provide a written letter and they will only be contacted if the applicant is a finalist.
Do I need to have exact hotel/overnight stay costs in my budget?
No, the budget is meant to be a loose estimate and it could be adjusted later, but $5,000 is the maximum amount – but please do include line items for airfare, local transportation, lodging, food, fixers, drivers, translators, and record requests if you anticipate needing that.
I already have a relationship with a media outlet; is it okay for me to publish my article with that outlet instead of a BSPH publication?
Yes, that is fine – but the BSPH editors will ask for a companion piece to be published in a BSPH channel such as the Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health Magazine or Global Health NOW as well.
